Yes, you can fit wall panelling yourself — plenty of people do, and there are good tutorials out there. The honest question isn't 'can I', it's 'what does it actually take', because the parts that go wrong aren't usually the parts DIYers expect.
What's genuinely straightforward
Measuring out a wall and marking level, consistent panel lines is simple with a spirit level, a laser level if you have one, and some patience. Cutting MDF moulding to length is easy. Basic tools — mitre box or saw, adhesive, a nail gun or hammer and pins — are all accessible for a confident DIYer.
Where it gets harder
Mitre joints on internal and external corners — a fraction of a degree out and the gap shows once painted
Uneven or out-of-true walls — most walls aren't perfectly flat or square, and panelling shows up every dip and bow unless you account for it
Filling and finishing — ridges, nail holes, and joints need the right filler (not standard wood filler) and a proper sanding and priming sequence, or they'll show through the paint within weeks
Staircases and raking cuts — angled cuts along a stair string are genuinely difficult and best left until you're confident with flat walls first
The bit people underestimate
The panelling itself — cutting and sticking the mouldings on — is maybe half the job. The other half is the finishing: filling every joint and nail head properly, sanding back without damaging crisp edges, priming bare MDF and any exposed nail heads to stop rust bleed, then two coats of paint applied evenly. Rushing this stage is the single biggest reason DIY panelling looks poor six months later, even when the cutting was decent.
A realistic way to think about it
If you're comfortable with basic DIY, have the time to go slowly, and you're working on a straightforward flat wall, it's a genuinely achievable weekend project. If your walls are uneven, you're panelling a hallway with corners and a staircase, or you want a flawless factory-look finish, that's where experience starts to show — not because the individual steps are secret, but because knowing how to compensate for a wall that's 8mm out over its length only comes with having done it before.
