Decorating Older and Newer Homes in Stone, Staffordshire
Share
Stone has a real mix of housing — canal-side cottages near the Trent and Mersey, Victorian terraces around the town centre, and newer estates on the outskirts. Each one decorates differently, and it's worth knowing what you're dealing with before you get quotes.
Older Cottages and Period Property
Older Stone homes often have uneven walls, previous layers of paint going back decades, and woodwork that's been painted over many times. The prep matters more here than the paint:
- More filling and sanding — old plaster moves and cracks, and covering that up without proper filling just means it reappears.
- Lead paint on old woodwork — anything pre-1978 may have it under the top coats. It shouldn't be dry-sanded; it needs handling carefully.
- Breathability — solid-wall properties without a damp course can trap moisture behind modern plastic-based paints. Older houses sometimes do better with a more breathable finish.
Victorian and Edwardian Terraces
Tall ceilings and original features are the appeal, and also what adds time. High stairwells need proper access equipment. Original coving, picture rails and skirting all need cutting in by hand. If the features have been painted over repeatedly, the detail may need carefully bringing back before it's worth repainting.
Newer Estates
Newer homes are quicker to decorate — flat, even walls and modern woodwork — but they come with their own quirk: builder's finish. New-build walls are usually painted with thin contract emulsion that marks easily and doesn't take a new colour well without proper preparation. A lot of the work is getting a sound base rather than fixing damage.
New builds are also where wall panelling makes the biggest difference — it's the quickest way to add character to rooms that can feel plain.
What This Means for Your Quote
Two houses on the same street in Stone can be very different jobs. That's why we visit and measure rather than quoting from photos alone, and why we give one written fixed price for the whole job rather than a day rate that varies with what we find.
