How Much Does It Cost to Decorate a Hall, Stairs & Landing?

How much does it cost to decorate a hall, stairs and landing? It depends mainly on the height of the stairwell, the condition of the existing surfaces, how much woodwork is included, and whether doors, spindles and bannisters are being painted as well as the walls and ceilings. That is why two apparently similar hallways can end up being very different jobs.

Why a hall, stairs and landing costs more than a bedroom

A hallway, stairs and landing looks like a relatively small area of wall, but the work is slower for reasons that are not obvious until you are doing it:

• Working at height — stairwells need ladders, hop-ups or a staircase platform. Every cut-in above the stairs takes longer than the same line at floor level.
• Spindles and bannisters — if these are being painted, they can take as long as all the walls put together. Lots of small surfaces, lots of edges, and each one needs preparation.
• Cutting in — hallways are full of edges: door frames, skirting, coving, light switches and the string of the stairs.
• Doors — most hallways have several doors leading off them. Each one adds preparation and finishing time if it is included.

What changes the price?

• Walls only, or woodwork too? — walls alone is the quickest version. Adding skirting, door frames, doors and spindles can significantly increase the amount of work.
• Condition of the existing surfaces — filling cracks, sanding old runs, repairing dents and dealing with patchy previous paintwork all add preparation time before the finish coats go on.
• Colour change — going from dark to light, or covering a strong colour, can need extra coats.
• Paint choice — different paints vary in price, coverage and the number of coats needed for a consistent finish.
• Ceiling height — a tall stairwell or awkward landing is a more involved job than a straightforward modern hallway.

How much does it cost to paint a hall, stairs and landing?

There is no single honest figure that fits every property. A quote for walls and ceilings only will be very different from one that also includes doors, skirting, architraves, spindles and bannisters. Surface condition and access matter too.

How long does it take?
